Xiqing is a unique historical district of Tianjin, where people advocate civil and martial virtues at heart. Yangliuqing Town is located in Xiqing District, Tianjin, near the Grand Canal. 2. New Year Woodblock Prints and New Year Culture
The New Year Woodblock Prints is the most representative folk art of Yangliuqing. During the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, the opening of the Grand Canal and the rise of water transportation in Tianjin turned Yangliuqing into an important trade center of commodities between the north and the south, hence booming economy.
Woodcut artists then moved from the surrounding areas to Yangliuqing for business, because the town was abound in Duli wood, a perfect material for engraving. They made popular Yangliuqing New Year Woodblock Prints, and even created a spectacular landscape where every family in the town and surrounding villages were apt at dyeing and painting.
The Woodblock Prints combines the traditional merits of paintings in Song and Yuan dynasties and the form of woodcut, arts and crafts and theatrical stage in Ming Dynasty. Such combination of woodblock overprinting and hand painting formed a distinctive style that is vivid, lively, auspicious and touching.
